Description

This book is writfen as a self-teaching course to provide the background and explanations necessary to teach the reader the art of designing transistor circuits. Experiments are provided throughout the book to give the reader "hands on" experience in both design and semiconductor testing. Chapter 1 discusses the basic theory necessary to transistor design while Chapter 2 explains the basic differences between the linear resistances used in electronics and the highly nonlinear resistances that are the basis for solid-state devices. Then, Chapters 3 and 4 examine the relationships between npn and pnp transistors and studies their characteristics and how they can be applied. Field-effect devices are examined in Chapter 5. Their characteristics, as well as their similarities and differences to bipolar transistors, are discussed and tested. Special-purpose devices are studied in Chapter 6 while Chapter 7 is devoted to the evaluation of measurement devices and the variety of special measurement problems that are encountered in making a sound evaluation of the various devices studied in this book. The various appendices provide useful information that ranges from some of the more important equations used for the Ebers-Moll ''back to back diode" equations to examining various kinds of instruments and components. In Appendix E, several interesting and useful experiments have been included for readers who desire additional experimental information.
