Natasha Carmichael is a 109-year-old half-caste (the child of a woman fed vampire blood during her pregnancy) of remarkable strength. Twenty-six years ago she helped get an invading force of vampires off her coven's doorstep and vanished. When she learns that Rainor, the coven's leader, is dying Natasha returns home to resume her position as heir to the coven. Or at least that's the reason she admits to publically.

Natasha knows a new half-caste has been born, violating the peace treaty with the vampires. If she cannot find out who caste the baby, the deadly Soong Order of assassins will solve the mystery by killing every vampire and half-caste in town. That is not something she wants to see happen.
