Description
"Curtis, I not only like your book; I LOVE it!"
Chief of Staff, CA Gov. Ronald Reagan
U.S. Attorney General Edwin Meese III, Pres., R. Reagan
Behind the scenes Revelations, Glimpses, Anecdotes & Vignettes from 49 Diverse people, Their Personal Relationships with Ronald Reagan and How Their Lives & His were Changed Forever!
The purpose of these books is to present intimate glimpses of Ronald Reagan, by many of my colleagues and me, in a factual enjoyable and relaxed format; in warm conversational prose.
Anxious to learn more of the inside stories of how the Reagans lived, worked and functioned? Read any chapter in any order, then browse through the dozens of photographs of the Reagan doing myriads of things Breathe in the essence of this remarkable man and his loving wife, Nancy.
Soak up the "team spirit" which permeated our lives whenever we were "on-the-move" or engrossed in a project with the Reagans. Whether on the way to the State Capitol building in a small convoy of the governor's limo & only one back-up security car, on a busy legislative morning or off for a horseback ride through the Rye grass and Poppy-splashed rolling foothills of the California Gold Rush Country; we experienced a side of Reagan most people never saw.
Volumes 1, 2, & 3 consist of anecdotes and first-person recollections and stories from individuals, who were my interviewees but, more importantly, my colleagues and friends.
Many were members of Reagan's original 1965-1966 Campaign for Governor of California. Some came aboard soon after the election and were appointed to fill key positions in the Governor's Cabinet and to head up state agencies and departments. You will find a sprinkling of professionals who had personal associations with the Reagans. For the most part, except in a few cases, these interviewees had never been recorded or published before.
This work is NOT a cursory glimpse; it gets very specific. A thrill came to me each time, either the interviewee or I would recall some exciting moment or incident we had shared while working for the Reagans. One vignette would generate another. it was almost a miracle, after all of this time, the camaraderie, the excitement, the spirit was NEVER lost!
These books were written to help tell the stories of the interaction between Reagan and the unsung-heroes, the ones in the trenches, those who in many instances were very young when they first started working for and with the Reagans. They had an insatiable work-ethic, spawned from the top by Reagan himself.
You will learn of the amazing twists in the minds of angry legislators, anxious business people and John & Jane Doe Citizen—ALL who wanted a piece of Reagan's time to urge him to consider some burning issue or perceived (many times legitimate) problem which had befallen them—when they would exit his office, after their meeting, all smiles and laughter—on the ONE hand being completely overcome with Reagan's HUMOR— while on the OTHER hand he would make mental and personal short-hand notes and ALAS! A day or a week or a month later—& follow-thru with the solution he had said he would attempt to achieve.
Reagan was an UNCOMMON man. He believed in a number of indelible "Watch-Words" and practiced them consistently: Agreements by Handshake— KEPT! Civility. Comity. Courtesy. Decorum. Honesty. Respect. Trust.
As Appointments Secretary & Crisis Management Chief for Gov. Ronald Reagan. Air Force Secretary for Pres., Gerald Ford & Special Assistant to President RR for National Security Policy & Nuclear Weapons expert, Thomas C. Reed states in VOL.3: "What set Reagan apart was his overarching sense of vision and a mental clock-speed that far outran everyone else." "Reagan was a man of the utmost integrity. He did not run for office for the perks and power. He just wanted to do a good job."
