‘FROM OTHER WORLDS’: “In his usual fashion, Quartermaine has used the short chapter format. In this way he certainly does move the action along at quite some pace, and ‘action’ writing characterises Quartermaine’s novels. His other forte is confrontation, which he employed with great success in his previous novels Sleepless in Bangkok and ‘White Slavery’ - For King & Country. The tale begins with a visit to our Earth by invaders from outer space. The fact that they have come to us rather than vice versa, shows that they are more advanced technologically than we are. It also becomes apparent that they have a different mind-set to us humans as well. Man’s aggressive nature being noted by one of the leaders of the extra-terrestrials. Initially it seemed as if it would be a great read for the sci-fi fans out there, with a very surprising ending. However, this is not the case. It should not be just dismissed as another sc-fi piece of imagination left to run wild, as this book has a much greater depth than that. It is a psychological thriller rather than sc-fi. ‘CYBERNAUT’: “Quartermaine is a human philosopher who looks inwardly and critically at ourselves, the human creation at the top of the food chain. The year of the setting is a thousand years hence, and the world as we know it has changed. No longer are there powerful nations and vassal states, but now the world is united, under the captaincy of Earth Corporation, which in turn, pledges its allegiance to the Voice of God. Whose will shall not be questioned. Quartermaine in this book asks the reader to confront him or herself and critically review deeply indoctrinated concepts, tenets and beliefs. For some people this may represent too high a hurdle, and the book will merely become a sci-fi rapid read. This would be a great shame, as there is much more in this book to review. For instance, the concept of Deity for starters, and the innate good and evil of mankind to closely follow. In this respect it is a follow up to the book From Other Worlds, and author Quartermaine himself suggests that that From Other Worlds be read first.
