'It was not until several weeks after he had decided to murder his wife that Dr. Bickleigh took any active steps in the matter.' Bickleigh, a hen-pecked country doctor of acrid temperament leads a pathetic life whilst dreaming of self-assertion. The plot unfolds to reveal not only his terrible means of escape from an unsatisfactory existence, his nervous blunders and hos emotions as he struggles in his own tangled web, but also a superb trial scene and a powerfully ironic conclusion which pulls the leg of Justice herself.
