S. Stephenson Smith knew that words do not exist in a vacuum and that an authoritative book on vocabulary would not be limited ot dictionary definitions. Thus, the first edition treated words as dynamic entities and drew heavily upon popular media to show words in action. In the second edition Mr. Greenhouse has added recent examples of word usage from many of the sources mentioned in the first edition from other printed matter, and from radio and television programs of the '50's and 60's. There are two completely new chapters: one analyzes words used on the air, and the other gives a comprehensive view of new words that have come into the language in the last two decades. Because Mr. Smith felt strongly that words help to shape events, he wrote extensively about the "word-hijackers," those who distort the meanings of words for unscrupulous ends. The second edition has been updated to include an analysis of current dictionaries and new material on the etymology of words.
