The scene is set: MACBETH, Act 1 Scene 1.
A young man, Lulach Beaton, has a compelling and inexplicable urge to make the journey home from his studies abroad to a remote and isolated village on the West coast of Scotland where his only remaining family is his grandmother and her two sisters. The women have a reputation amongst the villagers for their dabbling in witchcraft, but more serious clouds of disrepute have haunted the family for two generations; and Lulach in particular since childhood due to the murder/suicide of his mother and father.
The three sisters have a strategy that surrounds their magic and includes Lulach as the centerpiece of their ambition. No sooner established in the cottage with his grandmother, than the supernatural impact of their involvement in his life is realized by the visit of a talking raven that urges him to an act of revenge. He is reintroduced to his grandfather, Findlay, believed by Lulach to be dead, but who has been locked up in an institution for the past eighteen years as a result of the sudden and violent deaths of his son and daughter-in-law. On a visit to his grandfather, Lulach forges a relationship with a young nurse and a romance ensues, but is undermined by the arrival of Findlay’s wealthy brother, Gourlay, who has been contacted by the sisters and returns home after years in exile on receipt of the news of Findlay’s failing health.
The sisters send Lulach on an errand to a distant town to make a purchase in The Wool Shop from which encounter passion and purpose out of uncertainty begins to flourish, and in his present joy from that point begins the dawning of a brave new world, but not before turmoil and despair envelope his world.
Illicit love, deception, magic spells, ghosts, rape, seduction, voices in the wind, family secrets, forgery, an asylum, and a hidden will are a few of the subjects that unwind around Lulach’s fate which unfolds according to the grand design that has been shaped in accordance with the ambition of the sisters.
