Slacker gas station mechanic Eddie Duncan develops telepathic ability after a freak accident. Betrayed by his girlfriend Debbie, and escaping from the scene of a robbery, he attempts to use his newfound power to become the man Debbie always dreamed of.

He tricks his way into the position of assistant to the programming manager at Ross Technologies, an artificial intelligence company. Recognizing the potential of an employee, Winston Deaner, inventor of a computer called Vern with a voice recognition neural network, Eddie partners with Winston and builds a corporate empire. Intense media interest follows, but anti-technology currents are awakening. Eddie becomes hopelessly attracted to Dr. Haley Smith and establishes a medical center under her direction. Whilst on a ski break together, they are approached by a stranger, Victor Paine, who sees into their souls, and places thoughts in Haley’s mind…
