UNIVERSITY OF ILLINOIS ARCHAEOLOGICAL EXPLORATION OF THE LOWER ILLINOIS VALLEY - SCOPE OF TERRITORY COVERED
In March, 1928, work on the Illinois River, which had been discontinued in 1927 due to bad weather, was resumed at Chautauqua Park, north of Havana, Illinois. Not all of the mounds at this site had been explored in 1927, so the completion of this exploration was the first task.
After the conclusion of the work at Chautauqua Park the survey explored down the Illinois River as follows: the Chandler Mound, immediately north of the park; the Ermeling Mounds, just below Havana; the Sepo Mounds, about midway between Havana and Lewis-town ; the Kramer Mounds, a half mile above Snicarte; the Snicarte village site; the mounds on Knapp's Island; the Hagan Mounds at Browning; the Rose Mounds at Bluff City; the Rebmon Mounds at Frederick ; the Hilderbrand and Lewis Mounds at Meredosia; the Abbott, Mayes, Chambers and Castle Mounds at Naples; and the Kamp, Brangenberg and Retzer Mounds at Kampsville where the survey closed on October 1, 1928.
