Before I Die

A Summary

by
William F. Amato

Before I Die begins on a beautiful October morning. The peace and tranquility of a neighborhood on Chicago’s west side is forever shattered when a terrorist bomb devastates Little Children’s Hospital, a medical facility operated by The Secret Society of the Mystic Brotherhood. The Brotherhood dates back to the days of the Crusaders. The motive for the bombing: a seven-hundred year old act of vengeance.
Bernard Kline, a powerful Chicago attorney and legal advisor to the terrorist group, is found murdered in the garage of his lavish mansion in an up-scale western suburb of Chicago. Detective Peter Fuller, of the Barrington, Illinois police department is unceremoniously assigned to investigate the slaying.
Walter Franklin Clayton, former President of the United Sates, former Governor of the State of Illinois, former law partner of Kline’s and well known for his flagrant philandering, begins to fear for his own life.
Harold Hamilton, a retired FBI agent and lifelong member of the Brotherhood, whose older brother was one of the unfortunate victims of the bombing, surfaces as Detective Fuller’s prime suspect in the murder of Bernard Kline.
Hamilton, unaware of his involvement in the Kline murder investigation, relocates to Las Vegas, Nevada with the hope that a change of scene will be helpful in coping with the loss of his brother. Hamilton adds to his plight by shooting a small-time gangster in self defense. Hamilton’s weapon: a 9mm semi automatic, the same type of pistol used in the Kline killing.
Detective Fuller ramps up his investigation; his efforts uncover the incriminating fact that Hamilton was in Chicago visiting his orphaned niece and her husband, at the time of Kline’s murder. Additional circumstantial evidence mounts, but Fuller is frustrated by the absence of direct evidence tying Hamilton to the killings.
The stirrings, created by Fuller, coupled with information provided to him by the Brotherhood, alert Hamilton that he is the object of the investigation. His reaction is to further frustrate Fuller’s efforts.
A wealthy banker, and another partner of Kline’s, who were also instrumental in funding the terrorist group, are found dead. Again, it is determined that a 9mm automatic is the murder weapon. Harold Hamilton, to Peter Fuller’s total shock and dismay, offers his help in nabbing the murderer.
Forced to acknowledge the possibility that his prime suspect may be innocent after all, Fuller reluctantly accepts. Hamilton and Fuller combine their investigative talents and experience to finally corner the killer.
A gunfight ensues. Fuller is seriously wounded leaving Harold Hamilton to face the assassin alone. Will Hamilton prevail? Or will the murderer chalk up another victim? Will Detective Fuller recover in time to help Hamilton take the killer down? Perhaps Hamilton doesn’t want Fuller’s help; especially after the killer’s identity is, at last, revealed.
