Description
When George Orwell wrote 1984, he probably thought it was a work of fiction, not a blueprint to be carried out to the tiniest detail.
Unfortunately, in our post-9/11 world, we appear to be headed for a steady-state "war on terror," and the warning given to us by President Eisenhower in his farewell address has gone unheeded. Here are the famous words uttered by this military hero and subject matter expert:
“This conjunction of an immense military establishment and a large arms industry is new in the American experience. The total influence — economic, political, even spiritual — is felt in every city, every statehouse, every office of the federal government. We recognize the imperative need for this development. Yet we must not fail to comprehend its grave implications. Our toil, resources and livelihood are all involved; so is the very structure of our society. In the councils of government, we must guard against the acquisition of unwarranted influence, whether sought or unsought, by the military-industrial complex. The potential for the disastrous rise of misplaced power exists and will persist. We must never let the weight of this combination endanger our liberties or democratic processes. We should take nothing for granted. Only an alert and knowledgeable citizenry can compel the proper meshing of the huge industrial and military machinery of defense with our peaceful methods and goals so that security and liberty may prosper together.â€
Unfortunately, the warning given to us by President Eisenhower has gone unheeded. In 2008, the United States spent more on the military ($650 billion) than the rest of the world combined ($500 billion)! The Founding Fathers warned us against the dangers of standing armies back in the 18th century, but today our armies are standing in military bases around the globe.
It can be argued, quite plausibly, that the Democrat and Republican parties are respectively, the left and right wings of a different party, which can be titled the Military-Industrial Party. This party hasn't really come out of the closet, but when it does, we have prepared these 84 slogans for their upcoming political campaign.
Happy reading!
