John Howard Griffin, a white man from Mansfield, Texas, decides to take a tour through the Southern United States as a black man. Griffin writes all of his experiences and thoughts down in his journal. He does not fail to detail every single experience that he has or any person that he meets. In order to keep many people safe, Griffin does not use names or let many people in on his plan. By becoming a black man, Griffin sees firsthand what it is like to be a black person dealing with racism in the South.
