Fleur Talbot is a relatively young woman living in London in 1950 when the story begins. She is sitting in an old graveyard, working on a poem, when she is approached by a friendly policeman with whom she chats for a few moments before continuing her work. This event, she states, was the last day of a whole chunk of her life, although she wasn't aware of it at the time.
