Description

In 1980, Thomas Eck, a small town lawyer from Carson City Nevada became involved in drafting the constitution of an emerging South Pacific island chain, then known as the New Hebrides. The constitution was promulgated by an opposition group who decried the new government's proposed version of a socialistic government that would take away the historical freedoms and culture that the indigenious people had held so dearly. With limited resources, the opposition, with the help of Eck , gathered increasing support of the populace. Then the treachery began. A small airplane, on which Eck was supposed to be, was mysteriously machine gunned as it landed on a neighboring island.
Eck was then forced to escape from the islands surreptitiously and was caught in a violent storm, crashing on a cannibal island.
Here begins the tale of survival in which he was left as the sole survivor.
The book examines the constitutional processes and provides a good lesson in issues of governance and independence, showing that in many ways, primitive tribesmen have a clearer concept of government than their more educated counterparts. At the same time, there is a greater amount of treachery and intrigue than Eck, a father of five, had bargained for.
