From her laid back lifestyle in South Australia, 49 year old, wealthy widow, Linda Rossi, finds herself suddenly plunged into the world of the underworld crime lords in Los Angeles, Las Vegas and Palm Springs, when, in June 2003, her daughter Cindy Brampton, and Cindy’s stockbroker husband, Michael, suddenly disappear from their home in Newport Beach California.
Linda, distraught but determined to find her daughter and son-in-law, enlists the aid of her internet friend, 56 year old retired Sacramento police detective Scott Walker, flying to Los Angeles to meet him in person for the first time. As Linda and Scott try to unravel a case that has everyone baffled, including the Newport Beach Police Department, their feelings for each other become more and more intense, keeping them both on the edge.
During Scott’s investigation he uncovers a money laundering scheme that Michael appeared to be involved in through his work at McLean’s Investments in Newport Beach, California. When Scott makes the connection to underworld crime lords in New York, Las Vegas and Palm Springs he realizes Michael had been used to launder their illicitly gained funds through complex stock transactions to legitimize that money in the US.
With the FBI and the underworld crime lords hot on their trail, Scott and Linda refuse to back off until they have found her daughter and son-in-law in a maneuver that includes making a deal for Michael with the FBI, and the subsequent blanket arrest of crime lords around the country. But now they are faced with the reality of their own lives, knowing that to be together one of them has to give up their homes and families on opposite sides of the world.
