Description
Enemies are enemies. It doesn't matter if their on your side or not. Bill Cross a 30 plus year vet of CIA fieldwork is looking to retire into suburban normal life. His long time boss and enemy from their early days in the agency won't let him ride off into the sunset. The Grand Illusion takes you inside the corrupt world of drugs, cash, gold, power, and the people who control it. The illusion of stability and safety is fragile. The flow of power and control is as fluid as the waters of the Snake River wandering through the Teton mountain range.
Fort Knox has been emptied over the years by bureaucrats looking to fund their backroom deals with money from drug cartels. The drug dealers develop a strategy to move their hard to deal with cash for the precious rare metal. The never ending need for untraceable cash creates the perfect exchange of one asset for the other. Pallets and pallets of bundled bills are hard to hide and even harder to spend without creating unwanted attention regardless of who owns it. Victor Terrasas a self made drug lord finds a way to consolidate his hard to deal with cash into the power that gold brings to those who own most of it.
Sandy Cooper is asked her opinion by Presidents, Cabinet Secretary's, Congress, and foreign governments. She has developed the reputation through years of hard work and sacrifice of being the leading expert on money manipulation and movement throughout the world. Her knowledge and experience has made her opinion gospel when it comes to watching who is moving what where around the financial world. All of this has come at a price. She is in her mid-thirties alone with little hope of finding someone who would put up with her schedule and disdain for the uneducated. She is unwillingly thrust into a world she has seen digitally, but now has to deal with in living 3D reality.
Manipulation of the circumstances throw Bill, Sandy, and Jim, an upcoming agent with some skills into a nasty circle of containment, control, and revenge. Bill has been here before, but not against his own agency. He guides Sandy and Jim through the tangled web of lies, deceit, and embezzlement. The small band of three must use all their faculties and assets to stay alive and stave off the collapse of the world's monetary foundations.
The story takes the reader through the dark tangled webs of international drug trade, the underbelly of out of control US government agencies and the petty jealousies of the work place. The sacrifice of personal ambitions for duty and the Job keep the illusion of a normal life be just out of reach.
The story takes the reader weaving through the streets of Washington DC, the hills of Virginia, Mexico, South America, the Teton Mountains and then back to DC where justice has to be satisfied or at least tested to its limits.
