Balzac is a prime novelist who wrote in French, and his work has influenced famous French authors such as Marcel Proust, Émile Zola, and Gustave Flaubert, as well as foreign language authors such as Charles Dickens, Edgar Allan Poe, Fyodor Dostoyevsky, Henry James, William Faulkner, Jack Kerouac, and Italo Calvino.
