Description

This easy-to-understand history of three American wars (equivalent in length to a physical book of approximately 24 pages), was written especially for the multi-volume “World Book: Organized Knowledge in Story and Picture,” by the editors of that esteemed reference work.

Sample passages:

(from “The War of 1812”) A new English order followed that declared that any neutral vessel bound for France should (1) enter a British port and pay duty on its cargo or (2) undergo search at sea for contraband of war. Napoleon met this repressive measure with his “Milan Decree,” which prohibited all world trade with Great Britain and her colonies and ordered any vessel seized to submit to British search. France was not powerful enough to make its decrees effective, but Britain was able to police the seas in such force that neutral commerce was nearly destroyed. The effect upon the United States was disastrous. English warships practically blockaded American ports, stopped outgoing vessels in search of contraband and took from them seamen who were alleged to be British subjects, to impress (force) them into the home country’s navy to fight Napoleon.

(from “The Mexican-American War”) The immediate cause of the Mexican-American War (also known as the Mexican War) was the annexation, by the United States, of Texas in 1845. In 1836 Texas revolted from Mexico and was successful in establishing an independent republic, which was recognized by the United States in 1837. Notwithstanding the fact that Texas had been recognized by several of the leading European nations, as well as by the United States, Mexico never acknowledged its independence. There was constant friction between Texas and Mexico, and the latter had warned the United States that the annexation of Texas to the American Union would be considered as a declaration of war.

(from “The Spanish-American War”) The Spanish-American War was a brief war in 1898 between Spain and the United States, but it was important in its effects upon the world. The contest grew out of the severity and injustice of Spanish colonial administration in Cuba. The policy of successive captains-general, entrusted with the government of the island, had for half a century alternated between ineffectual efforts at conciliation and the utmost severity. Taxes were heavy, and the island became involved in serious financial difficulties. The demand for radical reforms and a measure of self-government became more and more insistent. Revolt succeeded revolt; despotism on the one hand was matched by anarchy on the other, culminating in 1895 in an insurrection of formidable proportions.
