Calling Tom Canning

Every once in a while a summer vacation can be life changing in a good way. But to have such an experience the destination has to be different, off the beaten path, where few dare to go. This is the story of such an adventure as the Walkers and their three teenage children leave suburban New Jersey to spend the summer at a remote fishing village in Northern Quebec.

Raising teenagers is hard. They don’t always listen. They don’t always appreciate the values their parents try to instil in them. When it comes right down to it, teenagers are very much a product of their environment. So why not change the environment? At least for a period of time… Perhaps for a summer vacation? That is exactly what Nick Walker and his wife Melissa decide to do as they travel to a remote fishing village in northern Quebec. The real journey begins when they meet Tom Canning, a territorial ranger, who becomes their summer guide and a mentor through the changing seasons of their own lives.

This story is based on a trip my dad took me on over 40 years ago to the Cabonga Reservoir in Canada. It was the trip of a life time. I’ve always wanted to go back there. Hopefully, someday I will.
