Marlene Montgomery ends up with full custody of her two estranged grandchildren when their mother, Marlene's ex-daughter-in-law, dies. Nick, the children's father, and Marlene's son, can't or won't step in to look after the kids from his first marriage.

Marlene's career as an environmental consultant is in jeopardy as she struggles to deal with her grieving grandkids, Dinah, 6, and Seth, 8. Her business partner wants her to retire.

Nine years later, the young man who killed the kids' mother seeks out the kids and creates havoc in the lives of this cobbled-together family.
