Here is QUESTION 39: What Is The Livianu Method 4 Ear-Training & Sight-Singing 4 Young Musicians?
As a high school student in the 1970s in Romania, I practiced ear-training exercises to recognize & understand notes, scales, intervals, & all kinds of chords.
I realized the importance of having a well trained musical ear & the ability to sing at will with Solfege. My goal now is to offer this theoretical & practical knowledge through a series of simple to difficult exercises.
In my school years these exercises were written down, but they were handed down orally in classroom practice or assigned as HW by our dedicated & foresightful music theory teachers in Romania. After graduating The Juilliard School in 1983 I reorganized the exercises & added a few more; I consider this to be an all-encompassing, efficient, cohesive & universally acceptable method of ear-training & sight-singing for young musicians (this method applies only to Western Music that uses the 12 tone tempered system, a.k.a. the tonal system).
I believe that “Every Child Has The Right To A Free Music Education”; my work outside of music, as a humanitarian & children’s rights advocate, convinced me that besides other universal rights that children have, music education is also a top priority. Sadly enough too many politicians & educators everywhere view music education as a dispensable subject as soon as there are budget cuts & financial woes.

The importance of music education for children has been well documented by scientists throughout the ages. This is why I came up with the idea of the “i Learn Music, 4 Free” series, via YouTube. Now children anywhere & anytime can access my exercises & practice them 4 free at www.youtube.com/ilearnmusic4free
Learning Music Starts With Singing & Deliberate Practice Makes Perfect!
There are 3 educational principles that guide this work: listening, singing & repetition, a.k.a. practice.
1. Listening & singing teaches the ear to focus selectively & with purpose; just as a GPS device in the car triangulates your position to guide you to a destination, the same way by knowing & being aware of your reference sound, the audio anchor La_A, 440 hertz, you can locate & learn the exact location of other notes, & the different types of note groupings (intervals, triads, 7th chords, etc);
2. Singing & reading music are the fastest way to absorb the theoretical facts of the ear-training & sight-singing drills;
3. Practice or repetition is the only way to develop, encode & forever embed this knowledge-skill & integrate it in the general music development; whether you are a professional musician or a music lover you will benefit from this course. Dedicated or deliberate practice is the 2nd principle that guides this course; you have to do things on purpose & focus on the task at hand; otherwise it’s a waste of time.
Each exercise has 2 important steps: LISTENING & SINGING.
Alternating between listening & singing each exercise is critical for the development of Absolute Pitch & Relative Pitch; these 2 skills are popularly known as Musical “Perfect Pitch”; you will never loose these abilities & they will help you understand, recognize & reproduce any melodic & harmonic pattern, scales, intervals, chords & individual notes.
Absolute Pitch & Relative Pitch need to be integrated in the overall musical training, whether it is performance, or composition.
I hope that My Method 4 Ear-Training & Sight-Singing will help children everywhere as it has helped my children & students.
