Chapter 1
I woke up at nighttime. Alexa was sleeping right beside me.
I hopped down to the carpet. The living room had three couches. I hopped on each of them, to try it out. Each one was soft and bouncy. I bounced around on them for a while.
Then I saw the TV. My mom had told us about TV. I picked up the remote control and pressed the Power button. Like magic, the TV came on. I turned the channels.
Alexa got up. She smiled at me.
“Did you turn it on?” she asked.
“I sure did,” I told her. “Ducks are smart.”
We watched TV for a while. Alexa’s brother came in and stared at us.
“He turned it on by himself,” she told him.
“Yeah, right,” he said.
“He did!” she told him.
“You’re not dealing with a monkey here you know,” I told him. “Or a dog.”
“Well, don’t let him get on the couch,” he said.
“Why not?” Alexa said. “I love him and I’m keeping him.”
“You can’t keep a duck,” he said.
“Why not?” she asked.
He thought about it. He didn’t have any answer.
“Can he lay eggs?” he asked. “You can keep him if he lays eggs.”
He stepped closer to me and squatted.
“Come on,” he said to me. “Let’s see you lay an egg. Come on, ducky. Let’s see it.”
I walked away from him. I don’t have to put up with that sort of thing.
