This is a synopsis of IMPS 1 and IMPS 2 together.
A huge heart-rending and funny, twisty fantasy adventure, in two parts, that has few boundaries, about a young man looking for answers to mend a broken heart…. or if you care to read on another level, a story elaborating on theological ideas about the existence of good and evil (Satan belongs in Heaven) .. not to worry however because you won’t be able to stop reading it until the end of the second volume when the levels will be as one, and certainly you will see more each time you compulsively read it again……...
Derek is a kind hearted, sensitive person who decides he would really like to find God, just to ask a few questions: A decision that lands him in Hell.
Along with four other ordinary chaps - Trevor, Lee, Jeff and an unlucky Adrian - Derek finds himself in a new small red body. Not good enough for heaven, not quite selfish enough for a direct trip to the lower levels of Hell, they have been transformed into Imps, menial servants of Hell, with a specific role – to take souls.
A new age was to start on Earth where the weeds would be removed to enable the flowers to grow. The imps mission was to cause the untimely accidental death of those selfish souls destined for Hell. They learn how to become invisible and levitate objects as well as effecting the emotions of their targets. They are conditioned to lose the personality they were and become efficient killers; albeit killers of evil souls. They also have to do some rather hideous chores.
But there was a problem; Beelzebub, second in command of Hell (after Lucifer) had other ideas for their use. Some of the targets given to the imps were good souls that Beelzebub needed to construct the ultimate weapon for his secret plan to start a war with Heaven and usurp Lucifer. Beelzebub also believed that Lucifer had no idea what was going on, but was so very wrong.
The imps complete their disturbing training, encouraged along by being regularly shown some examples of the horrendous punishments that awaited a failing imp in the lower levels of hell. Their new life quickly becomes routine until a fateful request by Lee causes Derek to find that his new target is not only a good soul, but an ex-girlfriend. And Derek starts wondering. Their next target shows signs of being a good guy as well, so Derek convinces Adrian to escape back to Earth and do a runner with the intention of finding the Heaven version of an imp. Instead they find an Elite (the best of the best from Hell), called Gemma, who is amazed that Derek wondered anything at all. Something was just not right…
Derek and Adrian then find themselves being chased to Heaven, meet God and an attractive Angel called Suki, and then ‘voluntarily’ go back to the lower levels of Hell to help discover just what was going on with the good souls that had been taken? Such a violation causes the ancient pact between Heaven and Hell to be broken and so the final war for dominance over Earth was set irrevocably in motion. The imp heroes end up in the middle of Armageddon, fighting for their lives and the lives of some unlikely friends – imps, demons and angels. And all the time one question resonates throughout the adventure - why does God not just stop it all?
Oh and scattered throughout are some interesting true facts discovered during the authors research, like the information published here for the first time, that UK Foreign Office officials used threats to hide from Margaret Thatcher. Was William Roberts from Grantham transported to Australia for Burglary really related to her?
On any level, it’s a good read AND would make a great film.
