§ Lefebvre first studied under Leon Cogniet and a year later attended the Ecole des Beaux Arts.
§ In 1861, he won the Prix de Rome competition for young painters. This award allowed him to study in Rome for five years.
§ In 1867, he returned to Paris and began painting the female figure. His successful entries at the Salon made him an officer in the Legion of Honor and in 1898, he was promoted to Commander.
§ Lefebvre’s figure paintings became so famous that his only rival was William Bouguereau.
