Description
When Aidan Shields, a junior who’s resigned himself to a humdrum high school life, and his friends are suddenly killed in a car accident, they awake to find themselves in the mysterious Skyscraper of Babel. The group and their guardian angels discover that the world after this one may be a bit more than they bargained for — and that adventure can be found in the most unexpected of places.
Kind and studious, Aidan Shields seems like your average high school student. But behind his fake smile, the sudden death of his sister Rose three years ago still haunts him. While driving with a motley group of “friends†— the goofy, slack-off Isaac, his prim and perfect sister Candice, the thick-skinned Sam, and the shy Emma — Aidan and the others are suddenly killed in a mysterious car crash, then thrown into a world none are ready for. The five awake in Limbo’s long-forgotten desert, the place where all lost spirits go after death. They are soon taken by the sleek Triple E, an eclectic express monorail led by an even more eclectic driver, to the Skyscraper of Babel itself, a futuristic tower of truly epic proportions.
Inside they meet their guardian angels, a peculiar set of teens that don’t seem very able to manage their own lives, let alone be protecting anyone else’s. Everything looks to run smoothly in the bustling skyscraper, but things are not always as they appear — for Aidan discovers that they were not meant to die that day. Upon meeting the leaders of Babel, the mysterious Seraphs, the group begins to realize that something is amiss indeed. When more sightings of the angels’ enemies, the daemons, are also spotted on Earth, these teens find themselves a key chess piece on the board of a cataclysmic plot.
Along the way, Aidan must come face-to-face with his troubled past, for he and his newfound friends will need to work together if they ever wish to get back home. Amidst a fledgling love for his beautiful guardian angel, Winona, and a terrible secret she seems to hide, Aidan tries to unravel the unknown that closes in all around him. Only with the will to find their way back home can Aidan and the others ever figure out the mystery behind their unexpected deaths. But will they be able to do so in time? Or will the trials of the tower prove too much for them to save themselves? For no one would have guessed they might become heroes — least of all, themselves.
