Death and Disease: 'Spanish' Influenza in County Durham, 1918-19

Influenza in 1918-19 is estimated to have killed up to 20 million people world-wide yet, shadowed by the Great War, it is often a neglected aspect of British history.

Written by Steven Edward Corfield, a rising historical authority on British history, the publication looks at the severity and horrors of the virus. Using the County of Durham as a localised study the publication focuses on three main areas:

1. Understanding peoples attitudes towards the virus' killings in contrast to their attitudes of the Great War.

2. Analysing the extent to which the Health Department modified itself after the onslaught to ensure better preparation to fight future epidemics.

3. Investigating the extent of poverty and deprivation and how this impacted on the severity of the virus.
