Description

Disclaimer: It should be understood this is not a book, rather a short story (a mere 4-pages - standard 8-1/2 X 11) ... and is not intended to teach piano-playing methods. Rather, to tell what one fellow learned through persistence ... playing jazz piano from self-taught determination.

This short-story unveils one guy's determination to play jazz piano well ... and to master and decipher chord symbols found in Fake Books. When telling others how he learned to play Jazz Standards ... Gershwin, Porter, Carmichael, etc., etc. ... there's often disbelief when his rather bizarre methods are explained.

This piano guy combines numbers (math) and melody solo notes, then commits them to memory (the chords ... not the music itself). He doesn't play by ear ... yet. He relies on his collection of Fake Books (20+ at last count) to make the cool sounds he creates ... kinda like Erroll Garner, a huge fan and mentor.

Anyone who takes the time and is determined will, in all likelihood ... and after a few weeks, perhaps months ... find themselves in an enviable spot ... a sought-after piano playing hero. Not just a wannabe, but a real jazzy player without all that theory stuff. You may not excel at playing scales in all keys, or wondering what key a particular tune is written. Who cares? Following the pattern in this story, you'll be able to play the cool tunes everyone loves ... the Classic Standards.

The piano pros ... those who've studied theory and jazz playing methods ... will likely scoff at this story. The guy featured here, however, is okay with that (with a twinkle in his eye). He just laughs-off the critics and keeps listeners in awe with his self-taught musical talent.

Go ahead and reward yourself with a quick read. Good Luck with this stuff...
