📖 Description
Sometimes guns are not enough to keep a soldier alive in combat. Sometimes it takes a desperate dream.
A helicopter shrieks out of the night sky over Vietnam, crashing in enemy country, and war-battered artillery scout Waldo Daugherty and a shattered half company of infantrymen shove into murderous Viet Cong Valley to save survivors at the risk of their own lives. Each soldier slogs through the jungle adrift in a bizarre and private fantasy that he desperately hopes means survival in this place of death and terror.
Sergeant Mars speaks to helicopters. Captain Daddy thinks himself a soldier when he is just a village parson. Peepsite believes he can survive the war if he dreams himself away from it. The Bee survives suicide and believes that proves he will live forever. Waldo thinks every life lost in the company is his personal failure as an artilleryman and he refuses to die too soon.
Here, in the hearts and souls of these soldiers, lies the meaning of the harsh trials a soldier must face in combat and in learning how to conduct himself in war.
The Kindle version is the 25th anniversary revised edition.
