Description
See where you are
See where you are going
See where you have been
On foot, in a car, boat or plane – even on skis – this book tells you how to do this using a moving map on an Android smartphone or tablet and, potentially, save hundreds of £/$/€s compared with a dedicated GPS device
The first part of this book tells you about using the mapping applications already on your device. The second part tells you how to go further by showing you how to get the best of the vast range of free (or cheap) mapping applications and maps that are available.
Android is a very popular operating system for mobile devices such as smartphones and tablet computers. The wide availability of these devices with GPS receivers offers exciting and reasonably priced opportunities for ‘moving map’ applications for many outdoor activities. In the author’s experience, navigation with a moving map is much more intuitive than dealing with the detail of routes and waypoints.
This book starts with the basics of GPS, how this can help you on your journeys and describes what you need to have and know. It identifies sources of free or low-cost quality mapping, the software tools you need to bring them to your Android device and how to use them ‘in the field’. If you want to get more deeply involved, there are instructions on how to use any paper maps you already own.
This is a book for the average outdoor enthusiast - no technical knowledge is assumed. If you are already familiar with computers and simple tasks like copying files from one place to another then that is enough to get you on the move.
A full glossary of terms is included.
It is not, however, about ‘satellite navigation’, the calculation of driving routes and how to follow them.
The author is a keen walker who, with a degree in mathematics, has been using his ‘golden years’ to develop mapping applications for organizations such as Walkingworld and Discovery Walking Guides.
