Apart from the intense emotional, physical and psychological toll this condition exerts on sufferers and their families, SCD has very high financial and sociological effects, especially in communities where it is very common. It is a very debilitating disease and its contribution to mortality and morbidity rates in African countries cannot be overstated.

The purpose of this book is to raise awareness of this dreaded disease, about the way it affects the body and about the support that people living with the disease may need.

As Africans it is important that we recognise SCA as a threat to our future and take steps to ensure that where people are born with the condition, they receive the best possible emotional, medical, psychological and social support that is available.
