Described by J.R.R. Tolkien as "The greatest and most convincing writer of 'invented worlds' that I have read," E.R. Eddison was one of the founders of the modern fantasy tradition. The Worm Ouroboros, his most famous work, is second only to Tolkien's own Lord of the Rings in importance as a bridge between the traditions of the ancient heroic saga and the modern fantasy novel.
