McConnell can't have a new hero giving people hope in a land conditioned to lawlessness, so he dispatches a brutal gang to kill Zachary's best friend from the war and abduct his wife.
Zachary pursues the gang, but fails to catch them before they arrive in Dixon County. And Zachary knows that McConnell has bribed or buried every man who's ever stood up to him. He tries at first to go it alone, but quickly realizes if he's going to take on almost a hundred gunhands and rescue the wife of his murdered friend, he's going to need to bring along three of the best gunfighters the West has ever seen.
Keeping these temperamental men together, while dodging traps, ambushes, and double-crosses at every turn, would prove a herculean task for a man twice Zachary's age, but the young deputy is no pushover. He learned to fight, and fight hard, from being the youngest in a tough line of men who've never missed a war. And, Zachary just survived three long, hard years in a ragtag, Rebel cavalry troop charged with raiding Northern towns.
The young lawman owes his friend his life, and he won't stop until he saves the woman or dies trying.
