“Paul, you have gone on record hypothesizing that one day you would be able to recreate a mammoth using the DNA from the remains of mammoths that have lain frozen for thousands of years in the arctic tundra, is that still your belief?” Before Paul was able answer the Cardinal went on. “You have also said that in theory one day we would be able to cryogenically store our DNA records and have ourselves regenerated at a later date.”

Paul was not sure he was comfortable with where this conversation was going, but joined the game anyway.

“Yes I have said those things could one day be theoretically possible, but we are still a long way away from that day and when or if that day comes, we run into the debate on what is, or is not ethical. On that day Carlo, I feel that your friends in Rome and I will not be playing for the same team. But again in theory it will be possible to extract the DNA from the feathers of the stuffed Dodo in the Natural History Museum in London, and use that DNA in the egg of a Southeast Asian Nicobar Pigeon, which is its nearest living relative, and by doing so recreate that self-same Dodo.”

“So Paul, if we were to take your theory one stage further, it should one day be possible to take the hair of a human, a man, extract his DNA, and from that DNA recreate that man, yes?”

“Well yes in theory it will be, but, as I have said we are still a long way from that, years of further research and trials, hundreds of millions of dollars of funding, and that’s before we get to the ethics’ and the moral implications. Look while I’m enjoying debating with a senior member of an organisation that is vocal in its opposition of my research, I think you need to tell me what this is all about.”

Carlo Salvatori stood up and walked to the window and looked out onto the manicured grounds.

“Dr Mackintosh we are prepared to fund the foundation of a research institute in your name for you to continue your research. In return we will expect you to form a team which will have as its sole purpose the investigation and development of a technique for recreating a long dead man from DNA extracted from his mortal remains.”

Paul suddenly realised why he was there. “Now hold on there a minute, are you talking about what I think you are talking about?”

“Paul I am a senior emissary of His Holiness and the Vatican Governing Committee, and as such I have been tasked with a sacred mission. As predicted in the gospels, all the indications are that we are now living under the ministry of the antichrist. Greed and lust are rife, violence and crime are out of control, starvation and death at the hands of our fellow man is called ‘regime change’. It has fallen to the church to change our fate. After Christ was taken down from the cross, Mary Magdalene cut a lock from his blood soaked hair, she later gave this lock to Peter who ensured that is was preserved. Later it was secretly transported to Rome where it remains to this day. When Jesus said that one day he would return, he understood a future that until recently could never have been envisaged by man, he said that a day would come when he would again walk among his disciples. What he understood, was that one day it would be his modern disciples that would have the ability to bring him back, that day is fast approaching, we are now at the dawn of the second coming. We have given this project the name Parousia, from the ancient Greek meaning ‘forthcoming arrival of the king’. Paul, it is my job to gain your assistance. We want you to bring back the son of God.”
