In Brown Wolf, Madge and Irvine (a pair of married couple) sheltered a hungry stray dog, naming him Wolf. They pleased Wolf in every possible way, but what they had got back were often hostility and vigilance. Wolf would run all the way north whenever fed full, but each time was retrieved by Madge and Irvine. One day, Wolf was missing again. Madge and Irvine found Wolf and encountered his former master Skiff Miller.
