The Prometheus myth is revisited as an Earth-born alien tries to secretly provide Earth with the scientific knowledge necessary to create electricity from thermonuclear fusion. Peri Mallach is a senior researcher and the son of Earth researchers. He participates in a secret, long-term data-collection and validation process to bring an unaware Earth into eventual membership in the Consortium of Worlds. Mallach's transfer of the fusion technology secrets will hasten membership but will completely violate intragalactic law; endangering himself, his mate, and several other loved ones.
He devises a too-complicated plan to use a DVD burner to copy and smuggle information from the Consortium to Earth. He believes that officials will be unaware of laser-based recording technology, which will enable him to pass through customs and back to Earth with the data-laden DVD.
The director of a galactic law-enforcement agency intends to stop Mallach by resourcefully stretching bureaucratic rules set by galactic government and her agency. Results for herself and the agency are disastrous, and completely expose the Consortium's research strategy to human scrutiny.
Mallach's family, Earther policemen, hospital personnel and an additional looming alien presence are all involved in the “gift of fire” from this Prometheus.
