Description
Book 2 in "Women of the Valley" series. The principle idea pursued by the Women of the Valley was separation; separation from the ruined world of “The Companies,†and more particularly, separation from the the masculine ideas of “manhood, metal, and money,†which were the driving values of the planet, before the Great-Collapse. When the location of the Fort of the Women was discovered, and the fort attacked, the Women had no other option but to leave their hidden location, even though they had successfully fought-off the army of the Black Tribe.
Leaving the fort was traumatic on many levels after the second attack of the Tri-Part tribes which ultimately failed; the tension of the Crow Party and their adamant stand against any participation of males, under any circumstances came to the fore....The physical disruption of the move (away from the only home they’d ever known) along with the danger coming from all sides in the great valley of the American West, caught-up with the Women after the separation of the Crow Party and the brutal attack on them by anunknown tribe, The Tribe of the North. The pressure on Thale, the oldest “male-friend†of the Women, as well as on Sweet William was great, and Trona and Sweet William were more or less expelled together, while the bloody attacks of the the Tribe of the Red-Braves continued, and pulled the pair into its vortex.
The traveling pair stumble into the area of Wanderers, who were rebels against all the rest of the tribes, and in disagreement with “The Cult of Manhood,†and all of its application to their lives. While all of this was occurring, the Mountain Tribe, was squaring-off with the Red-Braves because of their bloody attacks; the Mountain Tribe leader, Trion has learned that he is actually the son of a “Breeder†of the Women of the Valley, and is forced into changing his attitude toward the Women, who defeated his army, as well as the other participants in the Tri-Part attack on the Women, coming after the Black Tribe’s defeat.
The Red-Braves capture Sweet-William and prepare to torture him,as Trona is found by the Mountain Tribe, and ultimately leads them to rescue Sweet-William because of a curious Red-Brave rule, which would not allow their men to come into contact with any “outside†women....The story turns at last with Thale and Sweet William becoming diplomats for the Mountain Tribe, and attempting to rescue the Crow Women, who’ve been kidnapped by the Tribe of the North....Finally, Thale stays on as a diplomat, while Sweet William separates himself from all the other tribes and travels alone to find Soft-Rabbit who is now under the protection of his Canyon Tribe.
