Description

This Young Adult novel follows two preteens in present-day London — a British girl and an American boy — as they discover a strange loom from the Victorian era that weaves clues to a hidden treasure.

THE VICTORIAN COMPUTER centers around a small loom that a Victorian inventor, Giles Grimthorpe, has made for his grandchildren, Sophie and William.  It's a Jacquard loom, with which cards determine pattern.  But Grimthorpe's, instead, weaves clues to hidden gifts. We witness Sophie and William's relationship with their eccentric grandfather in flashbacks to 1863, as he entertains them with a series of inventions.

Parallel to Sophie and William, but in the present day, are Josh and Tansy. Josh is the 13 year-old son of American businesspeople, in London to find new European headquarters for their company.  Tansy is the 13 year-old daughter of Jamaican immigrants.  Josh runs into Tansy as he measures an old warehouse, which was Grimthorpe's mill, and the two begin an uneasy friendship.

Josh and Tansy discover the loom, abandoned, while investigating discrepancies in Josh's measurements.  They manage to get it working and try to follow the clues it provides them. Eventually they discover less than they had imagined, but immeasurably more.
