The book and the series
The author, with a personal knowledge of Tibet, traces the emergence of the region from legendary origins to a coherent but typically violent feudal state, strongly influenced by Buddhism (from the 7th century AD). There follows an account of Tibet's development from the 15th century as the world's most famous example of a country led by a spiritual ruler, the Dalai Lama – and the emergence two centuries later of a second religious figurehead, the Panchen Lama. The last section of the book describes the tense and dramatic political clash of the present-day between Tibet and China, a major and ongoing problem deriving from the history of the two regions.

She read History and Art History at Cambridge, and lives in Somerset.
