Description
The rearrangement of theE lementary Algebra of Messrs. Hall and Knight was undertaken in the hope of being able to give to our advanced secondary schools a work that would fully meet their requirements in this important study. Many changes were made and additional subject-matter introduced. The Algebra forB eginners however, so fully meets the needs of the class of students for which it was written, that we have made only such changes as seemed to bring out more clearly important points, and better adapt it to American schools. With reference to the arrangement of topics, we quote fromM essrs. Hall and Knight spreface to a former edition: Our order has been determined mainly by two considerations :first, a desire to introduce as early as possible the practical side of the subject, and some of its most interesting applications, such as easy equations and problems; and secondly, the strong opinion that all reference to compound expressions and their resolution into factors should be postponed until the usual operations of Algebra have been exemplified in the case of simple expressions.
