Description
My work as editor has been very simple. I have left Professor Wilson stranslation unaltered except where there was an obvious slip, or whereS ayana sC ommentary had not been followed. It is now nearly thirty years since Professor Wilson finished his translation. The progress of Sanskrit scholarship may therefore perhaps be thought to have lessened the value of his work. I have endeavoured to meet this criticism by embodying in my notes (which are distinguished from those of Professor Wilson by being enclosed in square brackets) some of the results of modern German scholarship. My chief indebtedness herein is to Ludwig and Grassmann. In connexion with this subject it may, without ingratitude, be noted that there is a danger lest modern scholars should sometimes be credited with the results of native scholarship.
