Description

The nature of these depends upon circumstances. A quantity of electricity may be discharged through a compound liquid and the effects produced would be chemical, heating, and magnetic. The liquid would be decomposed ;it would be heated by the passage of the electricity ;and about it there would be a magnetic field. But if a similar quantity be discharged through a wire there would only be two effects produced, the heating and the magnetic. A gain, if a similar quantity be at rest on a body there will be no evidence of any of these effects ;but it can be shewn that the body is capable of attracting to itself any light particles of matter, and of repelling other bodies similarly charged with electricity. This charged body would not be heated by the resident electricity; there would be no sign of any magnetic field in its neighbourhood ;and if the charge were resident on a liquid there would be no chemical effect as a result. These are elementary facts and are summed up in the statement that the phenomena of electricity in motion are different from those of electricity at rest upon bodies. When a body is charged with electricity it is capable of doing work it may attract light particles of matter or repel similarly charged bodies and it therefore possesses energy in addition to its gravitational energy. This additional energy is electrical energy and depends upon the quantity of electricity and the potential of the body. P. Y.
