Description
When what are thought to be Raiders try to strike at the farming world of Kodomir, its Militia, led by the former mercenaries called the Wild Geese, attacks them, only to discover their attackers are not Raiders but escaped slaves. As the Kodomiri come to grips with the trauma of killing innocents, word comes that well armed and well-trained Raiders have struck the neighboring Benderist Holdings. With the head of the Holdings dying, the son of Baron Karl von Bender persuades Kodomir to find the slaves’ world of Barcat and destroy its Raider leadership before the Black Ravens become strong enough to invade. In return, he promises to free several of Kodomir’s neighbors, including Kwangdo, a world to which the Kodomiri feel a great debt for its help in fighting off a recent Benderist attempt at seizing Kodomir. To accomplish their mission, the Wild Geese need to bring the slave leader, Sarah O’Radler. But she and Gwielgi are in love and, a former slave himself, he has no illusions of the hell she is about to re-enter. The Currahee re-enter the scene and their relationship to both Kodomir and Barcat is revealed, a relationship that may cause the Geese to face almost certain destruction. As if fighting the Black Ravens is not enough, their mission to Barcat is complicated by the hidden agenda of an ally, an agenda that ultimately calls for the capture or death of the Wild Geese.
Mercenary’s Code, the third in the Wild Geese series, brings the reader into the experience of war in the 29th Century; while the weapons are of the future, the human drives are eternal. Friendships, love, politics, betrayal, vengeance, the terrible cost of freedom, are all a part of Mercenary’s Code. Steven M. Silver uses his experience in the military, as a historian, and as a psychologist, to take the reader into the realm of war and politics.
