Description
Bi i mo fq .J PREFACE This book is designed primarily for a text book, rather than as a work of reference for engineers. It has been the purpose of its author to explain the elementary principles of heat engines so that they might be readily understood by the average student and to show the application of these principles in the design, construction and operation of modern reciprocating engines. Perhaps more attention has been paid to practical problems and less to theoretical ones, more attention to the questions of the engine user and less to those of the scientist. As far as possible, questions of economy of operation are settled by reference to the results of recent experiments under working conditions rather than by theoretical considerations. Some of these results are new and published here for the first time. Attention is called to the chapter onS pecifications and Costs as containing some new material. It is hoped that the book does not lack anything which is really essential and that it contains nothing which can well be omitted. CH. B.
