On June 25th, 2009 one of our most iconic figures of the music industry, the ‘King of Pop’, Michael Jackson was pronounced dead (at 21:26 UTC).
The news of his death shook the online world of his followers. Websites around the world crashed from an overload of Jackson fans, eagerly trying to seek out the truth. The Los Angeles Times website (latimes.com) and TMZ (TMZ.com) both suffered huge downtime and outages. Google thought the repeated searches from millions of users for the term “Michael Jackson” was an attack on its search engines, so it actually blocked any searches related to ‘Michael Jackson’ or ‘Michael Jacksons Death’ for over half an hour.
Such was the magnitude and public disbelief of Michael Jackson's death that most of the Internet was flooded and brought to its knees while the world explored and came to terms with the devastating news that was being distributed.
Even the internet’s most established company America Online (AOL) Instant Messenger (AIM) completely collapsed for over 40 minutes under the sheer volume of users messaging each other about this tragic news.
Over 5000 tweets per minute were recorded on twitter that mentioned Jackson, directly after the news broke.
The world was in total shock and disbelief about the sad and tragic news of Jackson's death.
On July 7th, 2009 Michael Jackson's memorial was held at the Staples Centre in Los Angeles, followed by a private service for family members at the Forest Lawn Memorial Park. The whole event was watched by over 3 billion television viewers which made it the most watched live television event in history.
