About the Author
Frigyes Karinthy (1887–1938) was a Hungarian journalist, dramatist, short story writer, poet and translator. He practically wrote in every possible genre, but was most prolific as a journalist, and published more than five thou sand articles.
Although he never received a college or university degree, he was always keen on new scientific findings, which is reflected in many of his works.
His first literary success was The Way You Write (Ãgy Ãrtok ti), a volume containing stylistic parodies of his contemporary fellow writers published in 1912.
He translated several well-known literary pieces of which the most famous is probably his version of Winnie-the-Pooh.
His friendship with Dezső Kosztolányi was legendary, and was the source of several humorous stories.
He married twice and had two sons, Gábor Karinthy (poet) and Ferenc Karinthy (writer).
About the Title
Please, Sir (Tanár úr kérem) is a collection of humorous short stories about Karinthy’s experiences at secondary school both as a student and as an adult.
A film adaptation of the novel was directed by Frigyes Mamcserov in 1956, and a few decades later another, titled The Whole Class is Laughing (Röhög az egész osztály), by Ferenc Kardos starring András Kern and János Gálvölgyi.
About the Series
Our series features the translations of well-known and popular Hungarian literary works on three language proficiency levels.
When retelling the stories we followed the guidelines of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages, and paid equal attention to keep the spell of the original works. The readings are supplemented by a glossary and activities.
We recommend these titles to those who are taking a school leaving or language proficiency exam, who read for the pleasure of reading, or who wish to be able to talk about Hungarian literary masterpieces in English.
