Engineering Library TJ PREFACE. The purpose of this book is twofold, to provide, first, a textbook suited to a short course on steam turbines in engineering schools and, second, a book for the engineer on the principles and general design of turbines without going into refined treatment of the more difficult problems entering into their design. At the end of each article is given a short list of references where those wishing to pursue the subject will find it treated most thoroughly. Other references are given among the problems to sources available to most students and it is suggested that these be made subjects for short reports, thus extending the reading of the student beyond the limits of the present text.
