The object of this work is to instruct the practical electrician in the management, operation and testing of the more important electrical devices now in use. Almost every line of industry, great or small, now has much to do with electric motors and lights, to say nothing of the ever increasing number of small isolated plants using gas or gasoline engines in connection with electrical generators. From observation of many such plants in actual operation it has long been apparent to the authors that some hand book giving in a condensed, simple manner all of the instructions needed for the intelligent installation and operation of electrical devices is greatly needed. The method adopted has been that of familiarizing the student wT ith the underlying principles governing the design of motors, dynamos, arc lamps, etc., rather than to go overmuch into detail on the construction of particular commercial forms. It is confidently believed that the student who has mastered the general theory of dynamos, motors, etc., will have no difficulty in comprehending such variations in their application as he may meet with.
