In 1796 he was sent to prosecute his studies atE dinburgh, under the second Monro, Dr. Black, and the other distinguished teachers of that period. In March 1798, he received a diploma from the College of Surgeons of Edinburgh ;and in June, the same year, accepted the appointment of Assistant Surgeon to theS hropshire Militia, then quartered in Edinburgh Castle. Being desirous of obtaining more active employment, he was, in March 1800, appointed Hospital Mate by warrant, and the following month promoted to the Assistant Suroreoncv of the 40th Resriment ofF oot; on the day of his appointment he embarked with his corps for theM editerranean, and forthwith sailed with the expedition under the command of Sir Ralph A bercromby, destined toE
