Manual of Geography may seem to require more than ordinary preface; nevertheless, a short one may explain the object of its publication. Hitherto, those intended to be used in education have been rather compendious works of reference, than introductions to the study of a science, and are often overloaded with details, while general principles are omitted. In the present work, an attempt has been made to avoid these evils, and so to classify, arrange, and systematize the information contained in it, that it may be immediately available both to the teacher and to the scholar; and by the omission of all non-essential details, whether political, statistical, or topographical, to confine the attention to the principal subject. How far the attempt has been successful, those must decide for whose benefit it has been made.
