Myanmar's Road to Democracy

Myanmar used to be one of the richest countries in Asia with plenty of natural resources. It is now one of the poorest nations in Asia with widespread corruption, civil war and few international investments.

In 2011, the new government under President Thein Sein, a former general, made a series of surprise changes. Changes include signing cease-fires with armed rebel groups and freeing political prisoners, among them opposition leader, Aung Sang Suu Kyi.
The consequences of the reforms are far-reaching.
